Gemeinsames Alleinsein
Die Maori sind das indigene Volk Neuseelands, ihre Bedeutung für die Kultur des Landes äußerst entscheidend. Übersetzt man die Bezeichnung der Bevölkerungsgruppe ins Deutsche, könnten wir sie als normal oder natürlich ansehen. Die folgende Geschichte, über die ich heute sprechen möchte zeigt aber schnell, dass es in Neuseeland selten normal vorgeht. Ich kann mir deshalb nicht erklären, warum Sarah Lark für ihren Roman „Das Gold der Maori“ diesen Titel gewählt hat, wohlmöglich ist sie mit der Übersetzung nicht vertraut gewesen. Nichtsdestotrotz ist sie eine begnadete Schriftstellerin, die genau weiß, wie sie schreiben muss, damit sich der Leser von ihren Geschichten beeindrucken lässt.
Es ist die Geschichte von Kathleen und Michael, die ihre Heimat Irland verlassen wollen. Scheint anfangs noch alles glatt zu laufen, werden die beiden schnell eines Besseren belehrt. Michael wird als Rebell verurteilt und nach Australien gebracht. Kathleen, die mittlerweile hochschwanger ist, wird gegen ihren Willen mit einem Viehhändler verheiratet und muss mit diesem nach Neuseeland auswandern. Auch Michael soll kurze Zeit später auf die Insel gelangen. Mithilfe der cleveren Lizzie, für die er schon bald mehr hegt als bloße Dankbarkeitsgefühle, gelingt ihm die Flucht aus Australien. Trotz der neuen Beziehung hat Michael seine Kathleen nie vergessen, ein wichtiges Detail, was der Geschichte noch manch interessante Wendung ermöglicht.
