Es ist ein ungeschriebenes Gesetz, dass man sich nie selbst in Gefahr bringen sollte, schon gar nicht, wenn man Verantwortung trägt. Durch den Leichtsinn einiger Personen sind es oftmals die Familien, die später unter den drastischen Folgen leben müssen, Kinder kommen nach dem Tod ihrer Eltern in ein Heim, Eltern machen sich nach dem Tod ihrer Nachkömmlinge ein Leben lang schwere Vorwürfe. Auch Charley Webb hat zwei Kinder, die sie über alles liebt und ohne die sie sich ein Leben gar nicht mehr vorstellen kann. In Palm Beach/Florida ist sie eine äußerst bekannte Journalistin, täglich lesen Tausende ihre Artikel.
Charley erhält zu Beginn von „Die Katze“, einem Roman von Kultautorin Joy Fielding, eine mysteriöse E-Mail. Die Absenderin ist die Dreifachmörderin Jill Rohmer, die aufgrund ihres Vergehens, welches drei Kindern das Leben kostete, nun in der Todeszelle sitzt. Jill bietet der Journalistin die exklusive Geschichte an, über sie ein Buch zu schreiben. Zwar zögert Charley, der journalistische Ehrgeiz in ihr sorgt aber letztlich dafür, dass sie ihre Recherche beginnt. Kaum hat sie mit ihrer Untersuchung begonnen, erhält sie mehrere Drohbriefe, die den Mord an ihren eigenen Kindern ankündigen. Bevor Charley wirklich begonnen hat, nach der Wahrheit zu suchen, rutscht sie selbst in ein gefährliches Spiel mit reichlich Intrigen und manch überraschender Entdeckung. Wurde Jill vielleicht zu Unrecht verurteilt und wer hat etwas dagegen, dass Charley die Wahrheit ans Licht bringt?
