Eine Frau auf dem Heiligen Stuhl
Zugegeben, das Thema ist nicht neu. Seit jeher streiten sich katholische Kirche und der Rest der Welt um die korrekte Angabe aller je auf dem Heiligen Stuhl gesessenen Päpste. Es mag ja sein, dass man bei einer so langen Geschichte das ein oder andere Jahr vertauscht, obwohl selbst das ein Frevel wäre, wenn man bedenkt, dass in Rom alles seit Urzeiten sehr detailliert dokumentiert und archiviert wird. Das ist es auch nicht, was man der Kirche vorwirft, sondern mehr der Aspekt, sie vertausche ganz bewusst Dinge oder lasse sie sogar komplett von der Bildfläche verschwinden, kehre die schlechten Dinge und Personen, die es überall mal gab und so auch in der Kirche unvermeidbar gibt, unter den Tisch.
Eines dieser immer noch stark angezweifelten Dinge ist Johanna, „Die Päpstin“, die sich im 9.Jahrhundert so nach Rom geschlichen hat, dass sie letztlich zum Oberhaupt der katholischen Kirche wurde, als Frau wohlgemerkt. Donna W. Cross weiß von diesen Lücken in der Geschichtsschreibung und hat sie in ihrem Roman thematisiert. Sie zeigt das Leben einer von einer Heidin Geborenen, die besondere Fähigkeiten aufweist und von einem Gelehrten, der ihre Besonderheit erkennt, in den Bereichen Philosophie und Logik gelehrt wird. Johannas Durst nach Wissen nimmt beinahe täglich zu und als sie nur knapp einem normannischen Feldzug überlebt, beschließt sie, um ihr Leben zu schützen, als Mönch ein Kloster zu gehen, was nicht die letzte Etappe ihre katholischen Laufbahn bleiben soll.
