Emma führt ein sehr glückliches Leben mit ihrer grossen Liebe John. Bis John eines Tages überraschend bei einem Unfall ums Leben kommt. Für Emma scheint das Leben in diesem Moment ebenfalls vorbei zu sein. Sie verkriecht sich, macht sich Vorwürfe, möchte nicht mehr am Leben teilnehmen. Doch Emma erkennt, dass sie von anderen Menschen gebraucht wird. Sie möchte für ihre Freunde da sein, wie auch diese sie nicht im Stich gelassen haben. Doch dazu braucht sie sehr viel Kraft. Und Emma lernt, dass man das Glück auch wieder zulassen muss, trotz allem Schmerz und aller Trauer gibt es eines Tages auch für sie wieder Lichtblicke.
Sehr einfühlsam behandelt McPartlin das Thema Tod und Trauer in diesem Roman. Sie bringt einen zum Lachen als auch manchmal zum Weinen, jedoch ohne kitschig zu sein. Ihr leichter Schreibstil ermöglicht ein zügiges Lesen.
