Paris im Jahre 1747. Nachdem Sophie mit 11 Jahren bei der Hinrichtung ihrer eigenen Mutter zusehen musste, wuchs sie die nächsten Jahre im Kloster auf und befindet sich nun in Paris. Um ihren Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen, arbeitet sie im Café Procope, Treffpunkt der Dichter, Denker und Aufrührer. Dort lernt sie Denis Diderot kennen und mit der Zeit auch lieben. Sie sträubt sich lange dagegen, denn ihre Mutter wurde u.a. wegen der Liebe zu einem Mann sowie wegen dem Lesen von Büchern ermordet. Die Angst ist auch bei Sophie allgegenwärtig, denn auch ihre Leidenschaft für Bücher kann sie nur heimlich ausleben. Diderot arbeitet an einer Enzyklopädie, die alles Wissen der Menschheit enthalten soll – zu jener Zeit natürlich Sprengstoff für die Monarchie. Die katholische Kirche fürchtet um ihre Macht und möchte das Werk mit allen Mitteln verhindern. Sophie begleitet Diderot über viele Jahre, sie versteht dass es bei seinem Lebenswerk um mehr geht als um ein Buch – es geht um Freiheit, um ihr Recht auf Liebe und Glück. Am Ende ist sie es, die alles daran setzt, das Werk zu veröffentlichen, sie stellt es sogar über ihre Liebe zu Diderot.
Die Philosophin ist ein faszinierender historischer Roman von Peter Prange. Er versteht es, immer wieder Spannung aufzubauen und seine Protagonistin Sophie als aussergewöhnliche, mutige und kämpferische Frau in jener schwierigen Zeit darzustellen, die bereit ist alles für das Recht auf Freiheit und Liebe zu riskieren. Denn es ist natürlich auch eine grosse Liebesgeschichte zwischen dieser mutigen Frau und Diderot, die in dem Roman sehr intensiv beschrieben wird. Ein wirklich anspruchsvolles und lehrreiches Werk von Peter Prange.
