Angst im Waisenhaus
Bilder haben eine ganz besondere Fähigkeit. Sie können den inneren Gemütszustand ihres Malers oder auch ihres Fotografen ausdrücken. Wir fotografieren Dinge und zeigen sie andern, um Emotionen einzufangen und beim Präsentieren auszudrücken, die wir vielleicht nicht mit Worten beschreiben können. Die Kunst der Malerei ist es, die Gefühle verdeutlichen kann, die man selbst nicht äußern kann. Simone Anderson ist Fotografin, ihre besondere Fähigkeit besteht darin, ihre Motive so zu wählen und sie in derartige Position zu bringen, dass sie im Betrachter eine seltsam authentische, düstere Stimmung auslösen. Einer der Besucher ihrer Ausstellung ist der Journalist Harry Fitzglen, der sich von Beginn an in ihren Bann gezogen fühlt.
Die beiden kommen ins Gespräch und so erfährt Harry, warum Simone solch düstere Darstellungen zu ihrer Lebensaufgabe gemacht hat. Simone hatte als kleines Kind eine siamesische Zwillingsschwester namens Sonja. Noch im Babyalter trennte man die beiden, Sonja verschwand danach spurlos. Aus dem Leben von Simone ist sie aber nicht verschwunden, beinahe täglich spürt die Künstlerin die Anwesenheit ihrer vermissten Schwester. Harry verspricht sich auf die Suche nach Sonja zu begeben, die Recherche führt ihn in „Das Haus der Schatten“, einem walisischen Waisenhaus, in dem alle Spuren der Vermissten zu enden drohen. Vorort scheinen alle Leiden, die hier jemals empfunden wurden, zum Leben zu erwachen.
